Product Description
Fretboard Logic Video I and II on DVD present real world applications of the concepts found in the books. You learn to play different styles of music as well as different guitar styles such as lead guitar and instrumentals. Along with using different techniques such as flatpick and fingerpicking, you get to enjoy different types of guitar and realize a deeper and broader learning experience that only this type of variety makes possible. Instead of the usual monkey-see, monkey-do, Fretboard Logic emphasizes comprehension of all aspects of what is being demonstrated, from the fretboard basics, to the the tone group construction, to how they function in different music styles. In the lead playing section, the emphasis is on creativity, where the goal is to draw from the available resources in the books to produce music of your own, with a clearly defined style and which is interesting to your audience. With the instrumentals, you play and analyze music that is challenging but still makes sense on all the different levels. The result is a learning experience which is more thorough, permanent and satisfying that what you may have experienced in typical guitar educational videos.
Review
After reading Fretboard Logic and viewing Video I it reminded of the line when you spot your soul-mate that you will share the rest of your life with: Where have You been all my life? --Dan Cunningham
I am 49 and just started playing the guitar this last Christmas. Your books and dvd are excellent and I'm glad I found them early in the game. I want you to know that I think you are extremely talented! I too have a ton of guitar books and videos but for some reason the idea of a menu really did click and it is just like those other people have written: I watched it twice and then boom! I had an understanding of how to make music without having to resort to playing songs from books like Skip To My Lou or Waltzing Matilda! --LA Donna
Bill, I am a piano player that has taken to guitar simply because it's portable. I travel a lot for my job and I get frustrated by not being able to play. So I drag a guitar along simply to keep my ears listening. Anyway, I bought your Fretboard Logic DVD in the hopes of getting my head around WHY the neck was configured the way it was. And my complements to you for a fabulous explanation. Your video coupled with my musical knowledge has given me a perfect approach to actually mastering the guitar with as much confidence as I have with the piano. And your emphasis on the language used to differentiate guitar specific language from musical language is a jewel. I am now looking forward to mastering all five chord and scale forms as well as both lead patterns. Thank you for an exceptional presentation of a challenging topic. --Mark Sanderson
From the Contributor
In developing our books and videos, the content and presentation was driven by the strengths and weaknesses of the media themselves. Books are excellent at organization, explanation, illustration and detail. Videos are best for demonstration, application and motivation. Our strategy with the videos is to present a comprehensive menu of tools, resources and materials available to the guitarist, and then show how different styles of music are derived from creative selection of the available resources. This allows each player to focus on the styles, techniques and guitar types which are preferred by them, and not just what the teacher teaches as is often the case with private lessons. Our videos feature structured learning, extreme close-ups, plus fast and very slow demos. The material in the books are applied two ways: in a lead playing environment in Part I in the fretboard section and using instrumentals in Part II in the tonal materials section. Also discussed are Rhythm Playing, Chord Progressions, Tonal Analysis, and Music Theory.
About the Actor
Author Bill Edwards started learning music on the piano at a young age in the traditional manner, playing classical music and reading standard notation. He became interested in popular music and the guitar in high school but those educational experiences centered around learning rock and roll songs by ear from records, and figuring leads and rhythms out by trial and error. In college, working part time as a music teacher, these dissimilar educational approaches finally came together when a guitar student asked him to show them how he was able to figure things out just by listening to it. The result was a discovery that became the cornerstone of Fretboard Logic, which is that while it has gone unrecognized and unexplained for centuries, the guitar's tuning system produces a separate and unique area of study and puts the instrument into a class by itself. The author took advantage of ongoing advances in personal computer technology and developed his own books and videos which offer innovations in several areas. Bill Edwards still plays guitar and piano every day and is always developing new projects in the fields of music, invention and education.
